Canine Parasiticides: An Approach to Individualized Care and Optimized Compliance

In a world where dogs range in size from toy to giant and life styles vary from never inside to rarely outside, a one size fits all approach to veterinary medicine is unlikely to be successful. Studies evaluating compliance rates demonstrate a need for veterinarians to focus on a simplified but targeted approach to ensure our patients are protected from a number of deadly parasites. This lecture will focus on the varied needs of our canine patients and how to best tailor our approach of parasite prevention to be most successful. As there are common misconceptions about the ways our monthly preventatives work, we will review the lifecycles of common parasites and where breakdowns in protection may occur. We will offer insight into ways we can battle the lack of compliance to ensure our patients are adequately protected and will touch on simplified approaches such as injectable options for heartworm prevention and the first once-monthly chewable that delivers all-in-one protection from heartworm disease, ticks and fleas, roundworms, and hookworms.
