During this event, Dr. Boston will first focus on the incidence of canine heartworm disease in Delaware and how it has continued to rise despite the availability of many heartworm prophylactic medications.  We will review the heartworm lifecycle and explain common misperceptions of how monthly heartworm preventatives work.  While there is an approved treatment for adult heartworms, it is important to remember the severity of the disease, even before an antigen test becomes positive and the risk of severe complications with melarsamine treatment.  Studies evaluating owner compliance with monthly oral preventatives demonstrate the need for a product that does not rely on the owner remembering to dose the patient at home.  Finally, we will review an injectable heartworm preventative medication which provides continuous protection for 12 months, thus removing owner compliance from the equation.

1.5 hours of approved continuing education credit will be provided through the Delaware Veterinary Medical Association

Deadline to register is September 18, 2019
