DDA Infectious Disease Reporting Form

The Delaware Department of Agriculture has developed a new infectious disease reporting form for use by veterinarians. To assist DDA in having a better understanding of the current situation surrounding infectious diseases in domestic animals in Delaware and the steps we may need to take to stop them from spreading, please submit this form to the Office of the State Veterinarian at DEanimalhealth@delaware.gov .

If there is a sudden increase in cases in your practice of an infectious disease, please report it immediately so we can address the situation with other practices and the public.

Controlled Substance Registration & Renewal

All practitioners who are APPLYING for a Delaware controlled substance registration (CSR) must complete a mandatory ONE-hour, two-part course pertaining to safe prescribing and distributing of controlled substances, treatment of pain, and recognizing and treating opioid use disorder.

All ACTIVE Controlled Substance Registrations upon renewal every two years are asked to attest to completing TWO hours of continuing education (CE) in the areas of controlled substance prescribing practices, treatment of chronic pain, or other topics related to prescribing controlled substances. This mandatory course qualifies as acceptable continuing education, for one-hour of CME, only once.

Government Relations Committee

Help advocate for the veterinary profession in Delaware by joining the Government Relations Committee (GRC). The committee meets virtually 5 times a year and hosts a legislative reception in the spring.

Awards Committee

The Awards Committee helps spread the word among members about the annual awards and also helps select award winners. Awards are presented during lunch at the Annual Winter Conference.

Program Committee

Help shape education in Delaware by selecting speakers and topics for DVMA’s annual conferences. The committee meets virtually 2 times a year.

Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Committee

This committee is committed to advancing diversity, equality and inclusion in veterinary medicine through various initiatives and educational opportunities. The committee meets virtually every other month.

Scholarship Review Committee

Make a difference in the lives of veterinary students by helping to select winners for the annual student scholarship.

Editor

Do you have a passion for writing or enjoy selecting helpful content to help practitioners in Delaware? The editor will assist the Executive Director in creating or compiling content for the bi-annual printed newsletters and monthly Member Alert e-newsletters.

County Representatives

County Representatives serve on the DVMA Executive Board, representing members from New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties. Two representatives from each county serve a 2-year term.

Executive Board

Several opportunities exist to serve on the DVMA Executive Board. A Vice President is elected annually in November for the upcoming year and rotates through positions of Vice President, President-Elect, and President. Additional positions on the Board include Secretary/Treasurer (3-year term) and AVMA Delegate & Alternate Delegate (each a 4-year term).

The Delaware Veterinary Medical Association is pleased to offer veterinary students the opportunity to apply for 3 scholarships during the 2025/2026 academic year. Please choose the scholarships from the list below for which you are applying. You are eligible to apply for all scholarships using this one form.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MARCH 31, 2026

DVMA/Merck Animal Health 2025/2026 Academic Year Student Scholarship

Co-sponsored by Merck Animal Health, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a veterinary student in their second, third or fourth year of veterinary school. DVMA has established this scholarship for veterinary medical students from Delaware to assure the continuation of expert animal care and the scientific advancement of veterinary medicine.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

1. Student must be a Delaware resident as defined by at least one of the following criteria: (a) Graduate of a Delaware high school, (b) Resident of Delaware for at least three years, and/or (c) Permanent mailing address in Delaware.

2. Student must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 to apply.

3. Scholarship is open to veterinary students having completed their first, second, or third year of veterinary school.

4. Previous recipients may apply; however, first preference will be given to new recipients.

Dr. Craig A. Stonesifer 2025/2026 Veterinary Scholarship for Academic Excellence

Dr. Craig A. Stonesifer graduated from University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. After working in the Annapolis, Maryland area, he and Dr. William F. Moffett established Brenford Animal Hospital in Dover, Delaware in 1974. Over the years until his retirement in 2022, Dr. Stonesifer exemplified the standard of excellence in veterinary medicine and surgery, supporting his partners and associates intellectually and emotionally, mentoring and shepherding the doctors and staff. Because of his guidance, Brenford Animal Hospital has established this $2,500 scholarship for a veterinary student in perpetuity to honor his contributions to veterinary medicine and surgery in our state.

DVMA is proud to offer the annual DEI Scholarship, co-sponsored by NVA, for one veterinary student. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has completed at least their first year of veterinary school. DVMA has established this scholarship for students in Delaware who have advanced diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in their school and/or their community.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

2. Student must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 to apply.

3. Scholarship is open to veterinary students having completed their first, second, or third year of veterinary school.

4. Previous recipients may apply; however, first preference will be given to new recipients.

The $750 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has completed at least their first year of veterinary technology school. In its Vets, Reps & Pets program, DVMA showcases the relationship between legislators, their pets and their veterinarians.

DVMA invites legislators to share with Delaware’s veterinarians, the public, and veterinary industry partners their story with their pets. DVMA is always considering ways to promote responsible pet care and having a relationship with a veterinarian is a large component of that important aspect of pet ownership. With this project, DVMA hopes to enlighten and direct public opinion regarding veterinary medicine within the state by highlighting our state’s leaders and the great care provided to their pets and the importance of the relationship with a veterinarian.

DVMA will feature these important relationships on its website, social media, in electronic and printed newsletters, and at public events.

Senator Dave Sokola, a client of DVMA Member Dr. Janet Mitchell, is featured here with his rescued 5-year-old husky mix, Cayce. Senator Sokola feels that pets are part of the family and owners need to make sure they have the professional veterinary care they need. Pets with proper nutrition, attention, and exercise will remain healthy, and will help keep owners healthy as well. Cayce loves to go for walks at night and howls when someone squeaks her toys (providing laughs for her people!). Thanks to Senator Sokola for sharing Cayce’s story and to Dr. Mitchell and Hockessin Animal Hospital for taking care of her!

Dr. Richard H. Long Lifetime Achievement Award

This award is presented to a member of the Delaware Veterinary Medical Association (DVMA) who has demonstrated a lifetime of selfless dedication to veterinary medicine, the health of welfare of animals, and the betterment of the profession.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be awarded annually to a DVMA member who has:

An established history of distinguished service;
Made a lasting, reputable contribution to the veterinary profession;
Exhibited leadership and provided inspiration to others in the profession; and
Positively influenced the profession on a state, national or international level.

Nominees Should Have:

Made a positive impact on the profession on the state and/or national level;
25 years, or more, of sustained service and/or is considered an honor roll DVMA member;
Earned recognition by other industry, training, education or employer groups;
The respect of professional peers;
General acknowledgement as having reached a pinnacle of their profession or industry;
Personal integrity; and
Two letters of recommendation from DVMA members in good standing.

Nominations should include the name and contact information of the nominator including email and daytime phone number. The nominating individual should include reasons why the veterinarian should be chosen for this prestigious award.
