Preventing Rabies Transmission and How to Handle Exposure

Veterinarian Michael Watts writes that in the U.S. every year about 20,000 people are treated for possible rabies exposure, three dozen die from the disease every decade, and more than 7,000 animal rabies cases occur each year. Dr. Watts provides some guidelines for decreasing transmission of rabies including reporting bites to health officials immediately and keeping pets' rabies vaccination current.

DVMA MEMBER DR. JEFF BOWERSOX PARTICIPATES IN ANNUAL ACVO/MERIAL NATIONAL SERVICE DOG EYE EXAM EVENT



The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) announced record breaking results from the 4th Annual ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event. With the help of more than 200 volunteer board certified veterinary ophthalmologists throughout the U.S. and Canada, 4,000 service animals were examined during the event, an increase of 25% from last year. Guide dogs, handicapped assistance dogs, detection dogs, search and rescue dogs and other service animals including horses and even a service donkey received free sight saving exams.
Dr Jeffrey Bowersox from The Veterinary Specialty Center of Delaware has participated in this event since its inception. He looked at many animals this year from throughout the state including several Sussex County Corrections dogs, many dogs from Canine Partners for Life, and the Kent County fire accelerant detection dog.
